Why Choose a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps have become increasingly more common in Georgia homes largely due to their energy efficiency. Heat pumps often decrease the energy costs to heat and cool a home because they replace both the furnace and the air conditioner or central air unit. Simply put, they transfer warm air from inside to outside in the summer and reverse the process in the winter. In fact, Georgia Power and other electric companies offer some strong incentives to transition from a gas furnace to an electric heat pump.

Choosing the Right Contractor

Just like all systems in a home, HVAC systems don’t last forever. Well cared for heat pumps and HVAC systems can last 15 to 25 years on average depending on the type of system, the area you live in and maintenance. However, when a heat pump ins’t installed correctly, that’s when things can go awry.

In and around the Metro Atlanta area, you have a wide variety of contractors to choose from for your heat pump installation project. However, according the U.S. Department of Energy, roughly 90% of HVAC systems aren’t installed correctly. Many times, consumers are led to choose systems that are either too small or too large for the needs of their home. In addition, contractors that lack experience will many times use incorrect wiring or make other mistakes to save time or cut costs. But, when you choose Zone, rest assured we’re going to do things the right way.

The Heat Pump Installation Process

When installing a new heat pump, your contractor should first perform a J load calculation to make sure your equipment is properly sized. While square footage provides a simple measure of what you need, J load calculations consider other elements in addition to your home’s square footage including insulation thickness, the number of windows and doors, the number of occupants, and measures regarding your basement, crawlspace, slab, and more. This information is then used to select the proper system for your home.

Once the proper system is selected, it’s time for installation. Installation requires both removal of your existing system and installation of your brand new heat pump. Appropriate measures must be taken to properly remove your old heat pump according to EPA standards and then additional preparation may be required based on the area outside your home. This includes ensuring the ground is level for the new system and concrete pads or bases are prepared for the new system.

Last, and prior to clean up, your new heat pump must be commissioned to ensure the system works appropriately in heating, cooling and in case of the need for emergency heat.
